Single Port Laparoscopic Surgery
Single port devices allow for a few ports to be inserted through one incision site.
In order to accommodate these, the incision needs to be larger. It makes sense for those operations which require a larger organ, such as bowel, to be removed. This type of surgery is more technically challenging because the instruments are bunched closer together, but the results can be quite remarkable. Sometimes another 5mm port is added within the umbilicus. Dr Gan has had many patients go home two days after a bowel cancer operation using this technique.
